Police Departments

I feel that we have a duplication of services in the police departments that cover the Town of Kent. I feel that the local Kent and State Police can handle the task. I don't see the need for the Sheriff's Department on patrol in town. It seems to me they could be better utilized for other duties. While I don't pretend to be an expert on police utilization I would like to see comments from other residents on the subject. In these times of financial stress I feel we must use our resources wisely. Would we be better served abolishing the Sheriff's department and assigning them to the State Police? I think the increase at the state level would better serve our needs. The Kent Police Department does a fine job and are better equipped to do the job since they live here and are more familiar with the people and their needs. Perhaps Kent Fiscal Watch could have a poll to see if the residents feel the same or a variation of my plan or if they would want to keep things as they are.

abolishing services

In my opinion it would be much more economical to abolish the expensive Kent Police Dept. and pay the Sheriff extra for services. The Sheriff Dept has more resources and covers a larger area, also it is already close to Kent. Putnam Valley did this and it is working well. Maybe Kent could rent out the new expensive Police Dept building and make money to relieve our high taxes. We now pay salaries and benefits for 5 dispatchers in KPD and our 911 calls go to the Sheriff! That's already a savings and let's face it Putnam County touts itself as being a very low crime area. Do we really need all these services?
